Met Gala Menswear: Trend Highlights of 2016

Once reserved for New York’s social elite, the Met Gala is now Hollywood’s hugest red carpet event. Known formally as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, the event celebrates a new theme each year; this time it was ”Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology”.

So not only do attendants need to dress their best, but they are also expected to incorporate the chosen theme into their clothing. Now, you can imagine, Met Gala has seen its fair share of “fashion faux pas” throughout the years, with some celebrities taking the theme far too literally. But this year, we saw a few trends that celebrated the new age theme in a subtle but striking way.

One highlight from the male attendees had to be Idris Elba who perfectly presented the "tech white tie" dress code, as specified by Chairwoman Anna Wintour. Idris matched this clean cut outfit with an Apple watch - an accessory that most would consider "unfashionable" for such an event, but it was a surprisingly subtle addition which supported the overarching theme of the night. Tom Hiddleston also impressed with a white tie combo that showcased sharp lines for an ultra modern twist on a classic outfit.

Next we saw other variations on the event's dress code, with attendees wearing different shades of jackets, from shiny navy to cobalt blue and maroon, as well as black jackets with metallic accents and all white ensembles. Thankfully most people did take this year's theme with a pinch of salt. We’re not convinced Zayn Malik’s robotic arms will be the next fashion trend unfortunately!
